Sony Pictures Television has chosen the city of Vilnius for its production of “Star City” in Lithuania. “Star City” is a new spinoff of the acclaimed science fiction drama “For All Mankind.” Production will begin in early February in Vilnius and surrounding areas, bringing together a team of over 130 industry professionals primarily from Lithuania, and supported by an additional 40 workers.

“For All Mankind,” which has run for four successful seasons, explores an alternate history of the space race between global superpowers. The series was picked up for a fifth season by Apple TV+. The spinoff series “Star City,” created by executive producers Ben Nedivi, Matt Wolpert, and Ronald D. Moore, will expand this universe from a new perspective.

“We are excited to be working in Vilnius,” Ben Nedivi and Matt Wolpert stated. “The cinematic landscape and architecture of Vilnius will allow us to tell a gripping and authentic story. We are already amazed by the city and how accommodating they have been in our pursuit to expand the ‘For All Mankind’ universe.”

A robust expansion of the “For All Mankind” universe, “Star City” is a propulsive, paranoid thriller that takes us back to the key moment in the alt-history retelling of the space race. This time, we explore the story from behind the Iron Curtain, showing the lives of the cosmonauts, the engineers and the intelligence officers embedded among them in the Soviet space program, and the risks they all took to propel humanity forward.

Currently, various locations are planned for filming, including public spaces in the city center, as well as interiors in private apartments and residential areas.

“Baltic Film Services is thrilled that Sony Pictures Television has selected Lithuania as the filming location for their exciting new series,” tells Lineta Mišeikytė, the local producer of Baltic Film Services. “The choice to film here recognises and acknowledges the professionalism and expertise of Lithuanians in film production, particularly in recreating authentic historical details. Additionally, it’s welcome news for Lithuanians that director Nick Murphy is familiar with filming in Lithuania, and is eager to return to a revitalised Vilnius after many years.”

Ben Nedivi and Matt Wolpert serve as showrunners and executive producers for “Star City.” Ron Moore and Maril Davis of Tall Ship Productions also serve as executive producers, alongside Steve Oster and Andrew Chambliss. “Star City” is produced by Sony Pictures Television.

Production services will be handled by Baltic Film Services, with Baltic Locations managing filming locations. Both companies bring extensive experience from other major productions filmed in Lithuania, including HBO’s “Chernobyl,“ “Catherine the Great,“ BBC’s “War and Peace,“ and Netflix’s “Stranger Things.“
