Starting May 30, the Vilnius Film Office is launching a new film tourism project that invites visitors to explore filming locations independently while listening to specially created audio guides.
The project consists of thematic routes revealing Vilnius as a true cinema city – a place that has transformed on screen into 1980s East Berlin, 1940s Hamburg surrounded by rivers and canals, Trondheim, 19th-century Vienna, Kraków, southeastern Ukraine, London, 1981 Stockholm, Malmö, Copenhagen, and even a Soviet-style post-apocalyptic zone, among many other cities.
The audio guides combine stories of the city’s history, behind-the-scenes insights into film production, and narratives about internationally acclaimed and Lithuanian films and TV series shot in Vilnius. The routes are designed to allow visitors to discover the city at their own pace – walking through the streets while listening to professionally narrated stories available in both Lithuanian and English.
“Vilnius has long become an important location for the European film industry, yet until now the city has not had professionally developed film tourism routes. This project allows visitors not only to see filming locations, but also to hear the stories that turn the city into a living film set,” says Jūratė Pazikaitė, director of the Vilnius Film Office.
The film tourism routes will explore different film genres, historical periods, and faces of the city – from the aristocratic romance of Sisi and the atmosphere of Nordic noir productions to acclaimed Lithuanian cinema.
A total of seven thematic routes are currently being developed, while two guided tours will already be available for visitors on May 30–31.
Registration is now open at: https://bit.ly/4ue8vt9
The first live guided walks will begin at the end of May and continue throughout the summer and autumn:
- May 30, 10:00 AM – The Romance of the End of the Habsburgs in Vilnius (inspired by the series Sisi)
- May 31, 2:00 PM – Women, Cinema and Vilnius: Studies of Feminism in Film
- May 31, 5:00 PM – The Romance of the End of the Habsburgs in Vilnius (inspired by the series Sisi)
The project stands out as the first initiative to present Vilnius as a European cinema city through specially narrated thematic audio routes – a format of film tourism not previously available in the city.
The routes will be easily accessible online through the digital platform vilniuskine.com
The project also promotes sustainable city exploration by encouraging visitors to travel on foot or by public transport.
The film tourism audio guides will allow visitors not only to see the city, but also to hear it, as if walking through different cinematic worlds where a new story hides around every corner.
